Melodramas became popular as gas lighting came into theatres which didn't produce much light...therefore the action was more extravagant so the audience could follow.
After the French Revolution theatres opened their doors to the lower class people...therefore they broguht in much more revenue so many more playhouses were built in the 1800's.
