A History of France Between 1760 and 1830

• 1774 Louis XVI Becomes king of France at a time when the government was deeply in debt.
He was married to Marie Antoinette from 1770
Popular at first but soon became out of favour for his conservativeness and poor judgment in financial matters.
His financial advisor Turgot had a lot of influence until 1776

• 1776 Necker took over as Louis XVI financial advisor.

• 1781 Necker was dismissed.

• 1789 A meeting of the states general marked the beginning of the revolution. Louis XVI became very depressed at his incapability to

• 3 months after this Louis XVI had lost almost all control and instead decisions were being made by elected representatives of the people’s nation.

• 13th august he was arrested and after votes and debates he was charged with high treason and crimes against state.

• 1793 on the 16th of august Louis XVI was stripped of his titles and executed.

• 1793 – 1794 Known as the reign of terror a period of violence when many who were against the revolution were beheaded.

• 1799 Napoleon Bonaparte a military and political leader installed himself as first consul. He led numerous conflicts against other European countries and after a series of victories France secured a dominant position.

• 1812 the invasion of Russia badly damaged Napoleons army and it never fully recovered.
• 1815 he was defeated in the battle of waterloo.

• 1821 Napoleon died whilst being heal under British supervision.
